Dental Sealants
Protect your teeth from cavities.
What Are Dental Sealants?
The pits and grooves of your teeth are prime areas for opportunistic decay. Even regular brushing sometimes misses some of these intricate structures on the chewing surfaces of your teeth.
Enter sealants, which are thin coatings applied to the chewing surfaces designed to prevent the intrusion of bacteria and other debris into the deep crevices on the tops of your teeth.
Sealants actually were developed about 50 years ago but didn’t become commonly used until the 1970s. Today, sealants are becoming widely popular and effective; young children are great candidates for preventative measures like sealants because in many cases, decay has not set in. Even on teeth where decay is present, sealants have been shown to fight additional damage.
Sealants are applied by first cleaning the tooth surface. The procedure is followed by “etching” the tooth with an abrasive substance, which allows the sealant to better adhere. After the sealant is applied, a warm light source is directed to the site to promote faster drying. Sealants usually need re-application every five to 10 years.
Why Sealants Are Important?
Even with excellent brushing and flossing habits, it’s easy to miss the deep crevices on the tops of your teeth. Without protection, these areas become targets for decay. Sealants dramatically reduce the risk of cavities by creating a smooth surface that’s easier to keep clean.
Sealants are especially effective for children and teens whose permanent molars have just erupted, but adults with no decay or fillings in their molars can benefit too.
How Sealants Are Applied?
At Science of Smiles in Pasadena, Dr. Lee applies sealants through a quick, comfortable process:
• First, the tooth is cleaned thoroughly.
• Then, a special etching solution is applied to roughen the surface slightly, helping the sealant bond better.
• The sealant material is brushed onto the tooth and then hardened using a safe curing light.
The entire procedure is fast, non-invasive, and painless, typically taking just a few minutes per tooth.
How Long Do Sealants Last?
Sealants can protect your teeth for five to ten years with proper care. During regular dental checkups, Dr. Lee will check your sealants for wear and recommend reapplication if necessary to maintain full protection.
